Mombasa United edged Kariobangi Sharks 2-1 in the first leg of the promotion-relegation playoff at Mbaraki Sports Club on Thursday, taking a narrow advantage into next week’s return match in Nairobi.
The two sides went into the break level after a goalless first half, but the game opened up after the interval as Mombasa United found their breakthrough from the penalty spot.
Dennis Toeri stepped up in the 64th minute after the hosts were awarded a penalty and calmly sent Kariobangi Sharks goalkeeper Collins Omondi the wrong way to put Mombasa United 1-0 up.
The hosts doubled their advantage 12 minutes later when Rashid Waziri found the back of the net to make it 2-0 and put Sharks under pressure.
Kariobangi Sharks, however, found a way back into the contest late on.
Substitute Wayne Dalvine pulled one back with seven minutes remaining, giving the visitors a lifeline heading into the second leg.
Mombasa United held on to secure the win and will travel to Nairobi with a one-goal advantage, while Sharks will have to overturn the deficit when they host the return match on Tuesday, October 6.
How the playoff will be decided
The two-legged contest follows the playoff format outlined in Section 2.9 of the 2019 FKF Rules and Regulations.
The regulations provide for the playoff to be played over two legs, with the team scoring more goals across the two matches declared the winner.
The rules state that “the team with more aggregate goals at the end of the second leg match shall be the winner of the tie.”
If the teams finish level on aggregate after the second leg, the regulations provide for the away-goal rule to be used as the next tiebreaker.
Should the teams still be level after the aggregate score and away goals have been considered, the winner will be decided by kicks from the penalty mark.
That means Sharks still have a clear route back into the contest despite Thursday’s defeat.
For instance, a 1-0 Sharks win in Nairobi would level the aggregate score at 2-2. Under the rules, Sharks would then have the advantage because they would have scored an away goal in Mombasa, while Mombasa United would have failed to score in Nairobi.
A 2-1 Sharks victory, on the other hand, would leave the aggregate score at 3-3 with both sides having scored one away goal, sending the tie to a penalty shootout.
A win by two or more goals would see Sharks overturn the deficit on aggregate and secure the Premier League place.
For Mombasa United, the task is to protect the advantage they have taken from the opening leg and complete the job in Nairobi.
The aggregate winner will play in the 2026/27 FKF Premier League, while the losing side will compete in the FKF National Super League.
