Editorial Policy

1. Our Editorial Purpose

Michezo Kenya is a Kenyan sports news publication covering football, athletics and other sports that matter to Kenyan audiences.

Our newsroom aims to provide accurate, timely, relevant and responsibly sourced sports journalism.

We separate independent editorial coverage from advertising, sponsorship and other commercial activity.

2. Accuracy and Verification

Accuracy is a fundamental editorial standard at Michezo Kenya.

Before publishing, our journalists and editors assess the reliability of the information available to them. Depending on the story, this may involve checking:

  • official club statements;
  • federation and competition-organiser information;
  • interviews and direct statements;
  • official documents;
  • reputable media reports;
  • information from relevant individuals; and
  • more than one independent source.

The level of verification will depend on the nature, urgency and significance of the story.

We do not knowingly fabricate quotes, statistics, results, transfers, interviews, sources or other factual information.

3. Sources and Attribution

We identify sources clearly where appropriate.

When a story relies on an official statement, interview, document or published report, we aim to make that origin clear to readers.

Information from an unnamed source receives appropriate editorial scrutiny before publication. Anonymous sourcing does not by itself make an allegation or claim a confirmed fact.

Where practical, we seek additional confirmation for significant or disputed information.

4. Breaking and Developing News

Sports news can change rapidly.

When a story is still developing, we may publish available information while clearly distinguishing confirmed facts from reports, claims or unverified information.

As new information becomes available, we may update the article.

If an earlier report contains a material factual error, we will correct it rather than knowingly leave the error unaddressed.

5. Transfer Reporting

Transfer information requires particular care because negotiations and reports can change quickly.

Michezo Kenya may use the following editorial labels:

CONFIRMED — the relevant club, player or another authoritative source has confirmed the move or agreement.

REPORT — a credible source has reported the development, but the relevant parties have not necessarily confirmed it.

RUMOUR — information is circulating without sufficient confirmation to present it as an established fact.

We will not present a rumour as a confirmed transfer.

6. Quotes and Statements

We aim to reproduce quotations accurately and in context.

Michezo Kenya does not knowingly invent quotations or attribute statements to people who did not make them.

Where a quotation requires editing for length or clarity, we take care not to change its material meaning.

We distinguish a person’s own statement from our editorial characterisation of that statement.

7. Corrections

We take factual accuracy seriously.

When we identify a material error, we may correct the article and, where appropriate, explain what changed.

Minor spelling, grammar, formatting or stylistic corrections normally do not require a correction notice.

Readers who identify a possible factual error can contact the newsroom at newsroom@michezokenya.co.ke.

8. Fairness and Context

We aim to provide sufficient context for significant claims and developing stories.

Where a story involves competing factual claims, we may seek responses from the relevant parties and include material responses where appropriate.

Publication of a claim does not necessarily mean that Michezo Kenya accepts the claim as established fact.

9. Right of Reply

When reporting significant allegations or potentially damaging claims about an identifiable person or organisation, we may seek a response before publication.

Where circumstances make that impractical, we may provide an appropriate opportunity for a response after publication.

A relevant response received after publication may lead us to update the article or provide additional context.

10. Privacy and Personal Information

We respect legitimate privacy interests.

The fact that information can be obtained does not automatically mean that it should be published.

When deciding whether to publish personal information, we consider its relevance to the story, public interest, the circumstances in which the information became available, potential harm and applicable law.

Our Privacy Policy explains how Michezo Kenya handles personal information collected through the website.

11. Children and Vulnerable People

We take additional care when reporting stories involving children or vulnerable people.

We avoid unnecessary identification or publication of personal information where doing so would create unjustified harm or provide little legitimate editorial value.

12. Images and Media

We seek to use photographs, videos and other media responsibly and with appropriate rights or permissions.

Captions should accurately describe the material they accompany.

We do not knowingly use an image in a misleading context.

Where third-party material carries attribution or licensing requirements, we seek to respect those requirements.

13. User-Generated Content

If Michezo Kenya provides comments, submissions or other user-generated features, we may moderate material that is unlawful, defamatory, abusive, misleading, invasive of privacy or otherwise unsuitable for publication.

User submissions do not automatically become verified editorial facts.

Michezo Kenya may decline to publish a submission without providing a detailed explanation.

14. Conflicts of Interest

We seek to identify and manage conflicts that could affect editorial independence.

Editorial decisions should reflect newsworthiness, accuracy, relevance and legitimate editorial considerations.

Advertising, sponsorship, commercial relationships or personal interests should not determine independent editorial coverage.

Where a material conflict could affect a story, appropriate editorial steps may include disclosure, reassignment or additional review.

15. Advertising and Sponsored Content

Advertising and sponsored material should remain distinguishable from independent editorial coverage.

Where applicable, Michezo Kenya will identify sponsored or commercial content appropriately.

Commercial partners do not automatically control independent editorial decisions.

Our Advertising & Sponsored Content Policy provides further information.

16. Political and Public-Interest Matters

Sports journalism can sometimes involve government institutions, public officials, public policy or political issues.

When such matters arise in our coverage, Michezo Kenya applies the same standards of accuracy, sourcing and fairness that apply to other reporting.

We do not present political promotion or advocacy as independent editorial reporting.

17. Headlines and Social Media

Headlines should accurately represent the substance of an article.

We may use concise headlines for digital platforms, but we should not deliberately create a materially misleading impression about the underlying story.

Social-media posts and promotional text should remain consistent with the article they promote.

18. Updating Published Articles

We may update published articles when significant new information becomes available.

Updates may include:

  • new developments;
  • official statements;
  • corrections;
  • additional context; or
  • changes to previously reported information.

Where an update materially changes the factual position, we may indicate that the article has been updated.

19. Editorial Complaints

Readers who believe that Michezo Kenya has published materially inaccurate, misleading or otherwise problematic editorial content may contact the newsroom.

Please identify the relevant article and explain the specific concern.

We will review legitimate complaints and take appropriate action where the review establishes that a correction, clarification, update or other response is warranted.

Our Corrections & Complaints Policy provides the dedicated process.

20. Editorial Independence

Michezo Kenya seeks to maintain a clear separation between journalism and commercial activity.

Editorial decisions should not be determined by advertisers, sponsors, commercial partners or other external interests.

At the same time, editorial independence does not prevent Michezo Kenya from correcting mistakes, responding to legitimate complaints or complying with applicable law.

21. Professional and Legal Standards

Michezo Kenya seeks to conduct its journalism in accordance with applicable Kenyan law and relevant professional standards governing media and journalism.

This policy describes our editorial approach and does not create rights or obligations beyond those provided by applicable law.

22. Changes to This Policy

Michezo Kenya may update this Editorial Policy as our newsroom, editorial processes, technology or applicable standards develop.

When we make material changes, we will update the Last updated date at the beginning of this page.
