The FKF Disciplinary Committee will handle reported cases of violence and misconduct arising from the abandoned playoff between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United after the federation’s Leagues and Competitions Committee referred the matter for further proceedings.
The referral was part of a decision issued on Friday, October 9, following a hearing into the events that led to the abandonment of the second leg at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi three days earlier.
According to the committee’s findings, the match was disrupted in the 64th minute when Kariobangi Sharks players confronted the centre referee over his decision to award Mombasa United a penalty.
The written decision further states that Sharks kit manager Patrick Paul Otieno and a section of the club’s supporters invaded the field and physically assaulted the referee.
After being assessed by the medical team, the referee told match commissioner Nassur Doka that he was unable to continue officiating. The match was then called off.
The incident was reported at Langata Police Station under Occurrence Book number 56/6/10/2026, according to the committee’s ruling.
Clubs and match officials heard
The Leagues and Competitions Committee held its hearing on October 9, with representatives from both clubs and the match officials in attendance.
Kariobangi Sharks were represented by club chairman Robert Maoga and deputy chief executive officer Ronny Oyando. Mombasa United sent representatives Ahmed Ibrahim and Abdirahman Mahmoud, while Doka attended on behalf of the match officials.
The committee said it considered reports from the match officials, submissions from the clubs, information from the FKF security officer and oral evidence presented during the hearing.
It unanimously found Kariobangi Sharks responsible for the abandonment and awarded Mombasa United a 2-0 victory under Articles 3.3.2 and 3.3.3 of the Rules and Regulations Governing Kenyan Football (2019).
The ruling also confirmed Mombasa United as aggregate playoff winners and promoted them to the 2026/27 SportPesa League.
The referral to the Disciplinary Committee leaves the reported conduct during the match to be considered separately from the decision on the result.
In its October 9 ruling, the Leagues and Competitions Committee directed that the matters relating to violence and misconduct be taken forward for prosecution and applicable sanctions.
However, the decision did not specify what punishment, if any, individual officials, supporters or the club would receive following the separate proceedings.
The abandoned fixture had been the decisive second leg of the promotion-relegation playoff. Mombasa United won the first leg 2-1 at Mbaraki Sports Club on October 1, before Sharks took a 2-1 lead in the return match.
