Gor Mahia maintained their winning start to the 2026/27 Kenya Premier League season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over APS Bomet at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay on Saturday, October 17.
Captain Alpha Onyango scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute, breaking Bomet’s stubborn resistance to hand the reigning champions their second consecutive league victory.
The encounter began at a slow pace, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut scoring opportunities. APS Bomet remained disciplined defensively, limiting Gor Mahia’s attacking threat as the teams went into the break level at 0-0.
Gor returned for the second half with greater urgency, pushing forward in search of a breakthrough. However, Bomet’s well-organised defence continued to frustrate the visitors, forcing them to work hard for openings.
The decisive moment arrived in the closing stages when Onyango unleashed a powerful strike from outside the penalty area to beat goalkeeper Maxwell Mulili.
The move began when Mulili launched a long ball from a free-kick. Gor right-back Daniel Sakari intercepted it with a header, directing the ball towards Ben Stanley Omondi near the centre circle.
Stanley controlled possession and combined with Sakari, who had advanced down the right flank. Sakari then delivered a well-weighted cross into the penalty area, where Stanley had already made his run.
Stanley controlled the delivery before laying the ball into the path of the advancing Onyango, who struck powerfully towards goal. Mulili could not get to the effort in time as the ball found the back of the net, sparking celebrations among the Gor Mahia players.
The late goal proved enough to separate the sides, with Gor holding on to claim all three points.
The victory gives Charles Akonnor’s men six points from their opening two matches as they continue their title defence. Gor had started the campaign with a 4-2 victory over Murang’a Seal at Nyayo National Stadium on Tuesday, October 13.
Onyango’s late intervention also ensured that the reigning champions maintained their perfect record in the opening weeks of the campaign.
For APS Bomet, the defeat was their first of the season. They had opened their league campaign with a goalless draw against Mathare United, leaving them with one point from their first two matches.
Gor Mahia will now look to build on their positive start as they pursue a record-extending 23rd league title, while Bomet will seek to bounce back in their next fixture.
